“Get my daughter to walk again… and I’ll adopt you.” But what the orphan discovered changed everything.
The boy did not approach her immediately. He simply sat down on the ground, a few steps away from her.
— Hello, Sofía, he said softly. My name is Mateo.
The little girl did not answer. But her eyes slid towards him.
“You know,” he continued, “I had a little sister. She also stopped talking one day. The doctors said everything was fine. But she was just scared.”
A slight shiver ran down Sofía’s shoulders.
Behind the half-open door, Eduardo watched the scene, his heart pounding. He had never seen a therapist speak like that. No exercises. No pressure. No promises.
Mateo took a small wooden horse out of his pocket, worn but carefully preserved.
“It was my sister’s favorite toy,” he murmured. “She used to say that as long as she held it, nothing bad could happen.”
Sofía stared intently at the toy. Her fingers moved imperceptibly.
“Your dad is very afraid of losing you,” Mateo continued without raising his voice. “But you… you were scared first, weren’t you?”
The girl’s lips trembled.
