The taillights vanished.

And so did everything Lily thought was holding their life together.

Noah collapsed into the mud.

“What do we do?”

Lily didn’t know.

But she stood anyway.

“We walk.”

Minutes passed.

Then more.

Rain soaked them to the bone.

Noah’s hands went numb.

Then—

Headlights.

The black car stopped beside them.

The window slid down.

A woman leaned forward.

Silver hair. Sharp eyes.

Recognition.

Shock.

“Lily? Noah?”

“Grandma…”

Evelyn Carter didn’t hesitate.

She stepped out, wrapped them in her coat, pulled them close.

“What happened?”

“She left us,” Noah cried.

Something inside Evelyn hardened instantly.
