This 1885 photograph, showing a boy holding his sister’s hand, seemed charming – until its restoration revealed a tragedy.

Mount Auburn Cemetery, the same cemetery where her sister Clara had been buried 71 years earlier.

Dr. Graves requested the burial records. Julian was buried in the Langford family vault, next to his parents, and near a small grave simply marked Clara, Beloved Daughter, 1881–1885 .

But the most surprising discovery came when Dr. Graves contacted the Boston Public Schools Archives to search for photos or documents relating to Julian during his teaching career. A 1938 school yearbook, when Julian was 61 and nearing retirement, contained a brief biography: “ Mr. Langford has taught at Adams Elementary School for 37 years. He is known for his kindness, especially to children who have lost family members. He understands grief in a way that most adults forget.”

A small black and white photograph, showing an older Julian sitting at a desk surrounded by students, was included in the file. On the wall behind him, barely visible in the photo, hung a framed portrait.

Dr. Graves enhanced the image. It was a photograph of Julian and Clara dating from 1885.
