I ended my 36-year marriage after discovering secret hotel rooms and thousands of dollars missing from our account—and my husband refused to explain. I thought I’d made peace with that decision. Then, at his funeral, his father got drunk and told me I’d been completely wrong.
I’d known Troy since we were five years old.

Our families lived next door to each other, so we grew up together. Same garden, same school, everything was the same.
Lately, my thoughts keep returning to our childhood together, playing outside during summers that seemed to last forever, yet were never long enough, to school dances…

We had a fairytale life, and I should have known that that kind of perfection couldn’t exist in real life, that there had to be a hidden flaw rotting somewhere beneath the surface.
I’d known Troy since we were five years old.

We got married at 20, at a time when that seemed neither unusual nor rushed.
We didn’t have much, but that didn’t worry us. Life seemed easy for a very long time, as if the future would take care of itself.
Then came the children: first a girl, then a boy two years later.
We bought a house in the suburbs and went on holiday once a year, usually somewhere we could drive to, while the children would ask, « Are we there yet? »

It was so normal that I didn’t even notice the lies until it was too late.
