He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.
“We’re not teenagers anymore,” he continued. “We’ve both lived entire lives and loved other people, but I know one thing for certain—I don’t want to spend whatever time I have left without you.”
When he opened the box, I saw a simple gold ring with a tiny diamond.
“Will you marry me?”
Tears filled my eyes before I could even speak.
“Yes,” I whispered. “Of course I will.”
Our wedding was small and joyful, surrounded by family and close friends who kept telling us how beautiful it was to see love return after so many years. I wore a soft cream-colored dress, and Tobias stood beside me in a navy suit that made him look both proud and nervous at the same time.
When the officiant finally said we could kiss, Tobias leaned forward gently while everyone around us applauded. For the first time in more than a decade, my heart felt completely full.
Then something unexpected happened.
While Tobias was across the room talking with my son, a young woman I had never seen before walked straight toward me. She couldn’t have been more than thirty, and there was a strange seriousness in her expression.
She leaned close so only I could hear her voice.
“Alma?”
“Yes?”
She glanced briefly toward Tobias before returning her gaze to me.
“He’s not who you think he is.”
My heart began pounding instantly.
